Byron Shire Council has given up the fight against property owners in Belongil.
Years ago, they were given the opportunity to buy land cheap, knowing the threat of erosion.
“Residents who are living in Belongil since 1988 have bought knowing and the understanding that we wouldn’t be putting rockwalls and we wouldn’t be supporting rockwalls so I think there’s a degree and a lack of fairness.”
But just this week councillors voted 5-4 to adopt an interim rockwall solution for the properties under threat.
Mayor Simon Richardson says rockwalls are a waste of money for a short term fix but – acknowledges residents’ concerns.
“I don’t want to see any resident’s house hit the ocean there’s no joy in that.”
