The Merewether beach strip was closed this morning after a shark followed a surfer between Merewether and Dixon Park beach.
The surfer yelled for people to get out of the water before telling the lifeguards at Dixon Park who sounded the shark alarm.
About 7 people were in the water at the time.
Lifeguards were able to get everyone out of the water but closed Merewether, Dixon Park and Bar Beach for about 45 minutes while the jet ski from Nobby’s Beach inspected the area.
The shark was not spotted and the beaches were reopened by 10am.
