ORICA SAYS AMMONIA LEAK NOT AS BAD AS REPORTED

Orica has revised down the size of last week’s Ammonia leak from its plant in Newcastle.

Two rail maintenance workers were overcome by fumes, when Ammonia escaped from the Kooragang Island plant last Wednesday.

It was thought around 860 kilos of the vapour escaped, however Orica now says that was more like 170 kilograms.

The company says the initial estimate was based on a worst case scenario.

The New South Wales Upper House has begun a series of public hearings into the Hexavalent Chromium leak in August which led to a poisonous plume falling over homes in nearby Stockton.

Evidence is being given by Orica plant manager Stuart Newman today.
