Newcastle’s controversial fig tree saga has entered a new chapter, with Save Our Figs supporters, entering an exclusion zone and chaining themselves to poles. The issue came to a head last night when some councillors walked out of a council meeting rather than debate a last ditch attempt to call for an independent, safety assessment of landmark trees in the city’s Laman Street.
Fearing the removal of the trees would begin today, Save Our Figs campaigners, gathered before dawn and rushed barricades. The group has also applied for a Supreme Court injunction to prevent the removal of the trees until the matter can again be raised in next week’s council meeting.
