BALLINA EGG ODOUR MANGROVES NOT SEWERAGE
Ballina Shire Council is assuring residents a rotten egg smell that’s been lingering around town is from mangroves and not associated with any sewerage problems.
Council conducted water tests after numerous phone calls from residents who were concerned about a sewer leak, but tests have come back clear.
The culprit – decomposing mangrove fruit.
” the seeds and the fruit fall from the mangroves, they fall into the ground and go anarobic and they get the sulphuric smell from it and it smells like its sewerage, its a very similar gas to whats coming out of the sewer ”
Council says the odour should start to disappear over the next few weeks as the fruit and seeds stop dropping.
