More than 150 students and staff were evacuated from Clarence Town Public School, after a blaze broke out there just after midday.
Around 25 firefighters and the Hazardous Materials Unit were called in when flames took hold in a laundry area.
A neighbouring classroom was also smoke-affected.
All students were moved to the library, and many were allowed home early.
The fire started after a bar heater, that had been left on, set stored Christmas decorations alight.
