COMMUNITY CLEANS UP THE COAST

Hundreds of community-minded locals rolled up their sleeves to take part in Clean Up Australia Day today.

Armed with rubber gloves and garbage bags, the Brisbane Water Rural Fire Service targeted the Gosford foreshore.

They split into two teams, one tackling the thick scrub on foot, the other group using a boat to clean up the waterway.

“There’s been a lot accessed by the boat they’ve almost filled up all their bags already. We were very much surprised by how much there was underneath the bridges.”

But for a small group of Korean residents, it pretty much amounted to business as usual.

Every month, the group meets to clean up litter.

And their expertise ensured they were well prepared – using BBQ tongs to pick up smaller pieces of rubbish like cigarette butts and bottle caps.
