OIL SPILL CONTAINED IN BAY

An oil spill in Nelson Bay Harbour has been contained. The alarm was raised just after 10.00 this morning when a large fuel slick was reported in the marina area.

Some of the diesel oil has dispersed on the tide but a 20 metre slick has been trapped within booms.

Water police and Hazardous Materials Fire units from Newcastle worked on the operation which had been contained by midday.

Authorities said the spill doesn’t seem to be effecting penguins and other marine life in the harbour.
