BATTLE OF THE CORAL SEA REMEMBERED

While world leaders commemorated the Battle of the Coral Sea on the other side of the Pacific a small but solemn ceremony was conducted in Newcastle’s Civic Park.

The United States Consul attended the 75th anniversary service, along with local dignitaries and relatives of Coral Sea veterans.

The desperate World War II battle, fought mainly from aircraft carriers, saw US and Australian forces combine, to thwart the advance of the Japanese into the Pacific.
