RAT TRAPS FOR MUTTONBIRD ISLAND

Coffs Harbour’s Muttonbird Island will be closed to the public from the 24th to the 28th of this month while a rat trapping program is conducted.

The island, which is a popular destination for locals and tourists, is also a major nesting site for the migratory wedge-tailed Shearwater.

The birds, which nest in burrows, are vulnerable to attack by rats.

The trapping program is designed to measure the populations of both the introduced black rat and the native swamp rat.

Scientists will use the information gathered to devise a management plan for the island.
