Merewether’s Ryan Callinan has advanced to the quarter finals of the US Open of Surfing, following a win over Coolangatta’s Mitch Crews.
Callinan opened strongly with a 6.3, while Crews grabbed an early 5.3.
In the dying stages, the Novocastrian produced a four and a six to secure victory.
“Little jam off the top .. close out re-entry.”
The Gold Coaster tried something audacious in reply, but came up short.
Callinan now faces Ethan Ewing in the quarters.
