DUNGOG MAITLAND MERGER BACK ON THE TABLE

A merger between Dungog and Maitland councils is back on the agenda, with the state government considering a revived proposal to amalgamate the pair.

A spokesperson for the Local Government Minister  says a Dungog-Maitland merger will be considered alongside the recommended proposal to join Gloucester with Dungog.

Dungog Mayor Harold Johnston says whatever the outcome, it has to be justifiable.

“We’ve always said, this council’s always taken the stance that we want evidence on what’s good or not good for this community.”

Maitland has rejected the idea of a merger, reiterating its desire to stand alone.
