CALLS FOR RURAL MEDICAL LEVY

Meanwhile, the Rural Doctors Association is lobbying for a special loading on Medicare items to help attract and retain doctors in the bush.

An online poll carried out by the lobby group has revealed 80 per cent of rural Gp’s across Australia support calls for extra Medicare fees to be paid to rural and remote doctors.

President, Dr Nola Maxfield, says the poll shows Australia needs better incentives to entice doctors to the country.

It also revealed 60 per cent of respondents described their towns as under serviced, and 17 per cent are on call seven days a week.
