RED SHIELD APPEAL HAULTED

The Northern New South Wales flood crisis couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Salvation Army.

The nation wide Red Shield Appeal was due to be held this weekend, but has had to be cancelled in affected areas.

With coastal branches already stretched, the Tamworth Salvation Army emergency response team today left for Kempsey to help with the disaster response.

Team leader, Stuart Glover, told NBN News the Tamworth group was called to area after the Armidale Salvation Army Branch was unable to access the appropriate roads.

“We’ll be going to Kempsey to feed 3,000 people who’ve been stranded there without food and shelter, ad we’ll be feeding those people for the next three to four days, ” said Mr Glover.

The Tamworth branch food truck includes a kitchen and enough food for a week.

The Oxley Highway was opened for heavy vehicles mid morning, allowing the loaded van to travel east.

Door knocking for Tamworth’s Red Shield Appeal will go ahead tomorrow.
