One woman is dead, while seven others are lucky to have walked away with non-life threatening injuries after a four vehicle crash near Maclean.
Police have been told a northbound sedan crossed to the wrong side of the Pacific Highway at Chatsworth just before midday, colliding head on with oncoming traffic.
The driver behind the wheel of the sedan died at the scene.
Three others who were in the car were taken to Lismore Base Hospital for treatment, while a dog that was travelling in the vehicle was killed.
Several other cars, including an SUV which was towing a caravan were caught up in the crash, with the occupants only suffering minor injuries.
The Pacific Highway remains closed between Watts Lane at Harwood and and Chatsworth Road.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, or with dashcam, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
