NEW CHICKPEA FOR FARMERS

A Tamworth plant breeder has come up with a new variety of chickpea that could save the industry $10-million a year in fungicide costs.

Ted Knights, from the Department of Primary Industries, developed the plant which is resistant to root rot and fungal disease.

Plant Breeder, Ted Knights, says there’ll either be no sprays required or at most one spray or potting so that equates to a significant saving of around $100 a hectare.

The new variety will be available to farmers in 2010.
