CONCERNS HUNTER WETLANDS AT RISK

Ecologists are warning the Hunter will lose more of its native wetlands, unless more is done to save them from the effects of climate change and development.

Kooragang and Shortland already have international recognition under the Ramsar Convention.

But Hunter Wetlands Centre CEO Stewart Blanch says many others don’t have the same protection.

“We have wetlands that come across private land, public land, and they’re all linked. The water moves between them, or the birds and frogs and fish move between them.”

The push follows World Wetlands Day, promoting conservation around the globe.

“Shore birds are declining dramatically around the world so these sorts of habitats are really important for them”
