BRONZE FOR PALMER IN BEIJING

A fantastic result for Point Clare swimmer, Kirk Palmer at the Olympics.

He’s won a bronze medal in the 4×200 metre relay, behind the US and Russia.

While Palmer wasn’t in the team that swam in the final this afternoon, the 21 year old secured the Aussies’ spot with his swim last night, much to the joy of father Ian.

Last night Ian Palmer sat nervously at home to watch his son Kirk compete in his first olympics.

Unsure of whether he would get a swim until the last minute, Kirk got the call up, and didn’t disappoint, swimming a blistering leg to secure the Aussies a spot in the final of the four by 200 metre freestyle relay.

“He SMS’d me after the race and said I’m a true olympian now, cos I suppose you always think, will I get a swim and he was given a swim.”

Although he wasn’t in the team that swam in the final, Ian was happy enough Kirk got his chance to swim in the heat.

“I was so pleased when he did, was given the opportunity, he swam a great race, and he kept them in the, right in the line for a medal.”

And it may have been the fatherly advice helped him in the race.

“I said go through the pain barrier in the last 50 metres if you’ve got to.”

It certainly worked.
