NOBBYS HEAD LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN IT

Captain Cook marked it on his map as he sailed by in 1770 perhaps knowing Nobbys headland would become a Newcastle icon.

Many of us have images of the hulking cliff in our own photo albums, but none quite like the one recently acquired by Newcastle Region Art Gallery.

Newcastle Harbour 1901, unveiled last night, is how Sydney artist Julian Rossi Ashton saw the headland.

Until recently the valuable watercolour had been hanging in a local family’s home, but a community fundraising campaign has enabled the Newcastle Region Art Gallery to purchase it.

The rare work features in the Painting the Land exhibition, which runs until August 17.
