GAS EXPLOSION AT LISMORE TURF CLUB

A man is in hospital with severe burns following a gas explosion in Lismore this morning. Emergency services received a triple 0 call shortly after 8am this morning. Witnesses described hearing a loud bang following by flames in the canteen of the Lismore Turf Club. NSW Ambulance media said a man, believed to be in his 30s, was treated for significant burns to his legs, face, arms and head. He initially transported to the Lismore Base Hospital, and transferred to a Brisbane hospital shortly after. Police say early indications are that a gas leak caused the explosion. Several fire crews, including Hazmat responded, extinguishing the blaze within half an hour.

35-YEAR-OLD CHARGED OVER ALLEGED STALKING INCIDENTS

A man has appeared in a Lismore court following a number of stalking incidents. Shortly before 8pm last Monday, the man allegedly tried several times to enter a house in Laurel Avenue occupied by two women aged 23 and 30. Then around 12:30pm on Saturday, the same man allegedly walked through the front door of a house in Dalziel Street. He left shortly afterwards, but returned later that evening and attempted to gain entry by knocking on the doors and windows. Police arrested the 35-year-old. He’s facing two charges.

CANNABIS AND HYDROPONIC EQUIPMENT SEIZED

Police have allegedly uncovered an amount of cannabis and hydroponic growing equipment while executing search warrants at a number of properties in the Northern Rivers. Police raided six properties in Goonellabah, Lismore and Casino yesterday morning. At one address, police say they located four separate hydroponic set-ups, while cannabis plant and cannabis leaf were allegedly found at other properties. Four people, aged between 24 and 54, were charged with a range of offences, including cultivating a prohibited plant, supplying cannabis, and conducting a drug premises A fifth man, aged 61-year-old from Lismore, will also be issued a court attendance notice for drug-related infringements.

15-YEAR-OLD GIRL ALLEGEDLY APPROACHED IN LISMORE

A man will front a Northern Rivers court after allegedly approaching a child yesterday morning. Shortly before 8am, a 15-year-old girl was walking along Uralba Street in Lismore, when she was approached by a man in a Holden ute. Police allege the man spoke to the girl, and asked her to get in the car. The girl made a phone call and the man drove off. Subsequent inquiries led to the arrest of a 47-year-old man, who was charged with intimidate with intent to cause fear of harm, and breach of bail.

MULTI-VEHICLE CRASH NEAR LISMORE

A 30-year-old woman was taken to Lismore Base Hospital following a multi-vehicle crash on Bangalow Road near Lismore this morning. Emergency services were called just before seven o’clock. Three patients were assessed at the scene – only one was taken to hospital, suffering minor injuries. The road was closed for more than an hour and traffic diverted, causing lengthy delays.

MISSING FATHER AND SON MAY BE ON FAR NORTH COAST

Queensland police are renewing an appeal to help locate a missing father and son, who were last seen in northern NSW. 56-year-old Ken Dixon and his 8-year-old son were last seen in Lismore on June 13. It is unknown if they remain in Northern NSW, or have returned to Brisbane. Concerns are held for their welfare, and family has not been in contact with them since June 10. Ken Dixon, is described as Caucasian in appearance, 163cm tall, slim build and grey hair. His son is described as Caucasian in appearance, 100cm tall, heavy build and brown hair. They are believed to be travelling in a white 2011 ford Transit van with Queensland registration 065RTG. Anyone who may have information in relation to their whereabouts are asked to contact police.

TEENS TO FACE COURT OVER ALLEGED VEHICLE PURSUIT

Two teens allegedly led police on a pursuit in a stolen vehicle on the far north coast yesterday. Just after 8:30pm, police say they identified the stolen Nissan Pulsar on Bruxner Highway in Wollongbar, about 13km east of Lismore. The vehicle failed to stop, and a pursuit followed. A short time later, police were able to stop the vehicle near the intersection of Gordon Blair Drive in Goonellabah. A 15-year-old was charged with being carried in conveyance and breaching bail, and will appear in court today. A 16-year-old was charged with take and drive a conveyance and being an unlicensed driver, and will appear in court next month.

The Prime Minister and New South Wales Premier toured the flood zone today, as devastated communities begin the gruelling task of cleaning up. Malcolm Turnbull promised affected residents support, and businesses low-interest loans, while Gladys Berejiklian put insurance companies on notice.

LISMORE FLOOD VICTIMS THE TARGET OF LOOTERS

One man has been arrested, and another 16 moved on by police, as a result of reports of lootings in flood-ravaged Lismore. A 41-year-old man from Jiggi has been issued with a Court Attendance Notice for allegedly stealing property and intimidation, after locals confronted the man. He will appear in Lismore Local Court in May. Police say residents are moving some items outside to be cleaned, and the property is becoming the target of offenders. 16 people were also reported as acting suspiciously in the CBD, eyeing off resident’s property which was not being thrown away. Police have increased patrols around the CBD, and residents are reminded to report people who are acting suspiciously or seen stealing property.

The Lismore levee was breeched overnight as Northern NSW feels the full brunt of former Cyclone Debbie. More than 6000 people have been ordered to evacuate their homes.
