NICK FLANAGAN BOOKS HIS TICKET FOR THE US OPEN

He caddied for fellow Australian Aron Price at the US Open in 2016 – now the Hunter’s Nick Flanagan has made this year’s tournament. In a qualifying event in Texas, the 32-year-old had rounds of 68 and 63 to secure one of three spots on offer. It will be Flanagan’s second appearance in the tournament, after missing the cut in 2004… and follows a few years plagued by injury. He’ll join the likes of Jason Day and Adam Scott when the open begins in Wisconsin next week.

DODT SETTLES FOR SIXTH AT THE BMW PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Overnight leader Andrew Dodt shot a final round 73 to finish in a tie for sixth at the $9-million BMW PGA Championship in England. A double bogey on the par-three 14th cruelled the Newcastle golfer’s chances… but this birdie on 17 restored some confidence. “Crowd murmer. Hello. Hello. Ayyy. Beautifully done from the Aussie.” The 31-year-old missed an eagle putt on 18, but a birdie still helped him earn more than $280,000.

SOLID START FOR PAPADATOS AT WORLD SUPER 6 EVENT IN PERTH

Fresh from his win at the Victorian Open, Dimi Papadatos from the Central Coast has fired a 68, to sit two shots off the lead, at the first day of the World Super 6 event in Perth. Papadatos shot one over on the front nine, but recovered with five birdies on the run home. Brazel was consistent at the start of his round, knocking in a birdie on three, but so far everyone is chasing Australia’s Brett Rumford.

GREAT REWARD FOR CHARLESTOWN GOLF PRO’S

The grass is certainly greener for the sport at Charlestown, thanks to a husband and wife duo. Ryan and Janelle Smith were recently named National Club Professionals of the Year. “We’ve been at the club six years now at Charlestown, it’s a great club, we’ve done a lot of work with junior golf and just in general and it’s nice to be recognised.” The pair has already helped develop some of the Hunter’s best young players, and there’s plenty more on the way. “Great coaching young kids and seeing them progress and do well, as much excitement as me hitting a good shot. I’m a lot more focused on that these days.”
