TIED WINNERS AT PORT PRO-AM

Canberra golfer Matt Millar and the Hunter’s James Nitties have shared the spoils of this year’s Port Macquarie Pro-Am. The pair finished seven under par. Matt Stieger came in third, two shots ahead of former South West Rocks golfer Dale Brandt-Richards. After equalling the course record of 63, Millar entered the final round with a four shot lead. But he blew it, when he bogied the 7th, 8th and 9th holes. Nitties, shooting two birdies to catch the leader. The Pro-Am circuit moves to South West Rocks tomorrow.

LOCALS LEADING IN SEASIDE CLASSIC

To golf now, and Port Macquarie’s Geri Lavender has shot a first round nine over par, to take the lead in the Ladies’ Seaside Classic. She’s sitting three shots ahead of 2015 champion Jane Horne from Wauchope, followed by fellow local Wendy Gordon. The westerly winds and fast greens made for challenging conditions on the opening day at Port Macquarie Golf Club. Ladies have come from all over the state to compete in the Jean Derrin event, which is part of the 50th annual Seaside Week of Golf. Play resumes with a seeded start at 8:30 tomorrow morning.

STRONG FIELD FOR 50TH SEASIDE CLASSIC

Wauchope golfer Jane Horne will be looking to win her second Seaside Classic, when the prestigious tournament gets underway in Port Macquarie tomorrow. Sydney schoolgirl Hannah Park won’t be returning to defend her 2016 title, as she’s playing overseas. The same goes for Hunter golfer Dylan Perry, who won last year’s men’s Classic. But 2014 and 2015 champion, Tim Hyland from Bonville, will be vying for his third trophy. The men’s championship tees off on Saturday.
