RFS WARNS AGAINST HAZARD REDUCTION BURNS

While this week’s unseasonably hot weather is great for some, it’s a danger for others. The Rural Fire Service have now set the Fire Danger Ratings to very high. They’ll be taking a break from Hazard Reduction Burns over the next few days. They’re asking Coffs Harbour and Bellingen Shire residents to do the same. “We’ve still got a couple of weeks to go to get the burns, but if they can hold off until Friday and get over this little hot spell we should be ok.” The R-F-S have been required to attend more than a dozen hazard reduction burns where landowners lost control over the past month alone.   (VISION AND TALENT)

FISHERMEN’S MOORING UPGRADE COMPLETE

Whether you fish for fun or professionally, the water’s edge will now be more accessible at the Coffs Harbour Fishermen’s Mooring. The $2.7-million upgrade to the South Western Breakwater has officially opened. It includes 13 new parking spaces, and a wider road for vehicles. Council has hailed the development as a big win for the region’s fishing industry.

POLICE PLEASED WITH COFFS CUP BEHAVIOUR

As the clean up continued following yesterday’s Coffs Harbour Gold Cup, police were mostly pleased with racegoers behaviour Throughout the day, 30 attendees were escorted from the venue, some with police assistance. One serious assault took place at the venue. “There was probably about half a dozen assaults yesterday and through the evening which were alcohol related.” There were also four drug detections, mostly cocaine. While RBT officers were left with reason to smile. “I’m pleased to say there was only one low range PCS offender detected.” Although five people were found to be driving with illicit drugs in their system. HEALTH INNOVATION ON THE MID NORTH COAST

As the National Health Innovation conference wrapped up in Coffs Harbour today, health professionals were reminded that improvement comes in all shapes and forms. Everything from 3-D printing and bionics through to developments in the palliative care workforce were featured. “I think it was a great regional showcase of innovation and research and they chose, I believe, Coffs because we’re starting to grow in that respect.” Digital technologies and mid north coast clinical trials were also on the agenda. CALLS FOR EXTRA CARE AFTER GASTRO OUTBREAKS

With outbreaks of gastroenteritis in the south of the state, doctors are calling for extra care to be taken on the mid north coast. Local GP Adrian Gilliand says his practice has seen an increase in the number of patients suffering from the virus. “We have seen more Gastro than we usually see at this time of year, with kids getting sick and there has also been a couple of outbreaks out of nursing homes as well.” Parents of school aged children and people in contact with the elderly are urged to be vigilant. “The most important thing to prevent outbreaks is washing your hands. So every time that you go to the toilet or handle food, you should wash your hands.” (Vision and talent)
