WEATHER UPDATE: WINTER EXTREMES

Last week Melbourne experienced it’s warmest July day on record. This past weekend was the coldest in 7 years for the city. It has been an extraordinary turn around that has spread across most of eastern Australia.

This morning the mercury dipped below freezing at Williamtown just north Newcastle which sits at sea level. Another weather station at Corranbong on the western sid of Lake Macquarie also dropped below zero. These freezing early morning periods helped with frost formation across some Newcastle suburbs causing early morning commuters to scrape their windows clear before trekking off to work.

North of Newcastle there was a large blanket of cloud that rode in on the jet stream. That stopped the Northern Tablelands from dropping to some very cold temperatures. That layer of cloud will clear and the next few nights will become extremely cold with widespread severe frosts likely across the Tablelands and Upper Hunter. On the bight side the days should be mostly sunny.
