Newcastle is now Australia’s seventh largest city after being overtaken by the Gold Coast-Tweed metropolitan area.
The population figures are reflected in the latest State of Australian Cities report.
On the liveability scale, 73% of residents agree that Newcastle has a quality natural environment and good educational facilities and healthcare services (66%).
