LAMAN STREET ALMOST BARE

Almost a week after the chainsaws moved in, Newcastle’s Laman Street is now almost completely bare.

All the figs’ canopies have now been removed – and the last of the stumps are expected to be taken out tomorrow.

  1. The guy using the chain saw is not wearing eye protection.
He actually appears to get something in his eyes and he turns his head to the right and takes his eyes off the chain saw that he is still operating.

  2. Good point John,
    Re eye protection, OH&S…….. What’s that ???

    Didn’t you know,
Newcastle City Council has it’s OWN SET of RULES !
ie They are exempt from EVERY RULE.

  3. NCC are ONLY WORKING ON A DESIGN WHAT THE!!!! Thought they had a plan? oh thats right the plan was not to impact Civic Park, well you blew that! & to replace & replant the removed trees asap! so get to it Boys, your dirty little concrete sandpit awaits you. Perhaps you should also pay for the Police, Security & fences to stay, given your already documented historical issues with tree vandalism in new trees in Newcastle, Oh and then u can blame Save our Figs again for excess unapproved expenditure. Which is kind of odd when one considers it was Parks & Playground Inc that took you to the Land & Environment Court, but dont let the truth bother you none ya hear!

  4. Truth is not a word in the NCC vocabulary, everything they have done is based on lies lies and more lies. Shame on all of you responsible for destroying our beautiful trees and their inhabitants, the street and buildings look so old, tired, ugly and devoid of life. You have had your celebration drinks and patted each other on the back, hopefully you won’t be celebrating come election time.

  5. I am so relieved to see the community is organising against the corruption in this council. What a relief! This council’s actions increase the sense of apathy and hopelessness in our community which causes a much great loss than the carbon in those trees or the native fauna. The destruction of hope in our democracy is devasting in times like these when so many countries are in revolution We need leaders who listen and show up Leaders who care and stand by people even when differcult decsions need to be made. Leaders such as these will destroy. It is paramount that they must leave council and that we create stop gaps that prevent these types of actions from occuring again….Newcastle City Council are serving their own interests not the interests of the people who gave their vote of confidence in them…yes it is a shame
I am so shocked and the heart of this community is scarred. This council has done so much damage.

  6. When there is so much that needs fixing around Newcastle, why would council have made cutting down the magnificent Laman Street figs a priority? Especially as they were offered many opportunities to have further investigations done by world class experts – yet they turned down these offers! It is also amazing that every single one of the trees was deemed to have failed! Must be a world first? Eventually it seemed to come down to saving reputations and ‘big bully’ tactics. Of course, there were a few council members who tried to save the trees, so this does not refer to them all.

  7. Why do they keep giving these criminal vagrants air time? Especially that foul mouthed lady in the glasses at the end. I have seen her using such profanity that would make a sailor blush.
Please save the figs, leave town and never come back. I hear Tasmania is nice. Lots of logging to protest down there too you should be happy

  8. aaron buman and his mates believed anyone who loved and supported our iconic figs were a minority group of ratbags but guesswhat aaron buman was so wrong there is a large proportion of novocastrians who at the elections will show you how wrong you are you rude and arrogant man you left a blight not only on the landscape but in the hearts of many ordinary people who have not yet had a say shame on all involved
