LISMORE TO VOTE ON REDUCING COUNCILLORS

Lismore City Council will decide tonight whether to reduce the number of councillors after a change to the local government act gave councils the ability to reduce numbers without a referendum.

Lismore Council has 11 councillors, but five is the minimum requirement.

The recommendation is to reduce the number to seven, but mayor Jenny Dowell predicts councillors will vote against it.

“the arguments are likely to be, we’ve got a great diversity of councillors that give a range information and points of views in the community, if its not broken so why change it”

The reduction would see an annual saving of almost $90,000.
