UP TO 20 INVOLVED IN SHORTLAND BRAWL

A man has been charged after a brawl at a hotel near Newcastle overnight.

Around 11:30pm, a verbal altercation broke out between two men at a hotel on Sandgate Road in Sandgate. It’s believed the men were part of a group gathered for a birthday party.

The two men were escorted from the premises by hotel staff, but other patrons followed the men outside, with a brawl involving up to 20 people breaking out.

Police report that 15 people were still in the area when they arrived shortly after, with many having suffered injuries ranging from minor lacerations to a possible broken jaw.

Three people were taken to hospital as a result.

An 18-year-old man was charged with affray and behaving in an offensive manner. He will appear in court in January.
