STATE OPPOSITION WELCOME ACCC INQUIRY INTO PORT OF NEWCASTLE SALE

The state opposition leader has welcomed the ACCC’s decision to examine issues in Australia’s container shipping industry.

Luke Foley says current arrangements hinder Newcastle’s port and economy.

“The really shocking anti Newcastle maneuver here would be to put a set of handcuffs on for the next 99-years. If the Port expands, they’ll get fined for doing so, and the fines go to Sydney,” said Mr. Foley.

The consumer watchdog will examine ‘contractual restrictions’, which could prevent the expansion of a container freight terminal in Newcastle.
