An experienced surfer was knocked from his board at Merewether Beach this morning by what’s suspected to have been a shark.
Around 7.45 am, the surfer was riding a wave when his board was hit from below, launching him into the air.
One of the board’s fins was ripped out and the board’s tail and underside were also damaged.
The surfer wasn’t injured.
It’s uncertain whether the strike was from a shark or a collision with a dolphin.
Conditions were slightly overcast with reduced visibility in the water.
Large schools of bait fish have been reported along the coast.
