BRUCELLOSIS DIAGNOSED IN GUNNEDAH

A disease that can be fatal to dogs has made its way to Gunnedah in the last week.

Brucellosis is contracted from pigs who’ve shed bodily fluid or skin tissue.

Symptoms, for pig dogs in particular, include fevers and a change in eating habits.

Gunnedah Veterinary Hospital is warning residents there’s no effective treatment, or cure for animals.

“Be aware that it is out there and that it’s obviously in the pigs in the area. One of the main prevention or causes is not to feed your dogs the pigs, the dead pigs and you know just personal hygiene as well.”

The disease can also be contracted by humans, but it’s treatable.
