NO SHIP ACTION GROUP CONTINUES TO FIGHT SCUTTLING

Protestors are refusing to give up the fight to stop the scuttling of the former HMAS Adelaide off Avoca, even though it’s been given the green light.

200 people attended a public meeting organised by the No Ship Action group at Avoca last night.

  1. I was there at the meeting and there were about 160 people. 15 percent children. There was a sheet filled in by all but a few who attended and that would not have been 40 people so get some facts correct
second fact. The boat will be scuttled 1.8 KM off shore not 1.4km as a certain politician would have us believe
It will not be put down on a rock bed but it will be in at least 2.5M of sand
I have been following this for the past 11 years since the Central Coast Artificial Reef Project committee started they have worked without any financial assistance for the past eleven years on this project which was originally to get the HMAS Brisbane.

All I ask of anyone interested on this subject is to look a bit deeper and get the correct information and be informed not by scare tactics or media censorship but by the correct information.
The biggest Greene’s here are the Central Coast Artificial Reef Project committee who looked at all the international dumping/scuttling rules & regulations before even going to the NSW State Government to ask for assistance in securing a vessel for the Central Coast.
Yes the government have stuffed up un a few details which has given some more armour to discredit the te final outcome.
As for the Red Lead Paint, the lead in the fishing sinkers that are lost at north Avoca and South Avoca is more toxic than the led in the red lead paint. Once again dig a bit deeper and you will find the correct information
Look up the cable manufacturers Materials Data & Specifications Sheet and you will find that there are no PCB’s in the cabling.
Each naval vessel has a PCB register and this identifies all components that contain PCB’s in the vessel. So it is a simple thing to Identify the components & remove them. Just remember if you are living in a house that is over 30 years old you have a good chance that there are items in your home that have PCB’s in them

    Now go get informed

  2. So called Informed SP ,the ship is going to be 1.4 km from nth avoca headland and 1.7km from the lake entrance at avoca beach. If the boats cables had no PCBs on board then why were they removed before the hearing started. And why does a moron like yourself seem to think that if there is already lead contaminants at our beach, its OK to dump 20000 ltrs of extra lead paint in there. Also my old house is not being dumped in the ocean and i dont eat the PCBs in my house, The marine life will end up eating any that are left on board. I love being a nimby, if you dont protect your own backyard the neigbours my dump something in it

  3. Angus,

Before you call someone a moron you should re-read your comment. Your English and spelling is very bad and it makes you look like the moron.

  4. Im a recreational diver and I think the plan is great. As for lead, the salt water does initially disolve some of it but then a barrier is formed due to the chemcial process and the lead disolves a LOT! more slowly after that (you would know this is you did high school science). Lead is also a natural substance so it would be found in the ocean at some low volume anyway.
Secondly anything on that ship will be in the process of being eaten by soft corals after 10years so relax, also because it will only be shallow (around 40m the last time I heard) the ocean environment will destroy the wreck a lot faster than some of you probibly believe.
And finally it will create an artificial reef so all you fisherman will have bigger and more diverse species to catch, the community will get more tourism as a result and I wont have to drive to Nelsons bay from Newcastle every time I want to dive a decent wreck.

  5. I am amazed how a bunch of individuals once formed as a group, can perform such high level financial sabitage on a platform of untested posibilities and even more incredulous, stop the NSW, AUST Gov and our Central Coasts future in it’s tracks.
So whislt I commend you for your show of strength, acts of comradeship and empowerment, I condemn you for the level of absolute selfishness you have shown to your fellow Coasters and the HUGE amount of energy, time and NSW Gov funds sqandered in the meantime.
They should have been directed into much needed Central Coast infrastructure that is affecting us all in the here and now, so as a COMMUNITY we can live happy and less stressful lives, not just the special ones who live at Avoca.
