EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST OPEN FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING ON FORMER EMPIRE HOTEL SITE

The redevelopment of Newcastle’s former Empire Hotel site is finally advancing, with expressions of interest now open.
The previously derelict buildings on Hunter Street have been demolished, making way for affordable housing.
“The state government owns the land, Newcastle City Council is putting $2.9-million in with the intention is to get at least 17 affordable housing units in the development,” said Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Planning Craig Baumann.
Those 17 must be one bedroom units or studios… the zoning also allows for a mixed use development.
