Gwydir Shire Council says it may be forced to consider merging with Moree Shire Council, following IPART’s rejection of a 32.25 per cent rate rise.
Instead, the body approved a 15 per cent increase, citing a lack of community support behind its decision.
With the Fit for the Future deadline approaching, council will meet with locals next week, in a bid to garner support, so it can continue to stand alone.
If unsuccessful, the idea of amalgamation could be revisited.
