Locals have paid tribute to a Japanese national who was killed by a shark at Ballina.
41-year-old Tadashi Nakahara was surfing with friends at Shelly Beach yesterday morning, when he was attacked.
Fellow boardriders brought him to shore and attempted first aid, but were unable to save him.
Today, flowers and condolence messages were left on the beach for Mr Nakahara.
Beaches between Ballina and Lennox Head will remain closed until tomorrow.
