RAIL TRAIL GAINS THE SUPPORT OF NOROC

The idea to turn the unused rail track between Casino and Murwillumbah into a rail trail is gaining momentum.
The Northern Rivers Regional Organisation of Councils has thrown its support behind the plan, while Byron Shire Council has unearthed plans for a light rail service.

I live in the Northern Rivers and this issue has many people divided. On one side you have people who want both the rail and a trail. On the other are those who just want a trail. The hard thing is to get the latter to be honest and realise that without the rail, that all it will be is a trail. A trail suits tourists and locals who want to ride bikes, but no one will want to ride the 135km from Casino to Murwillumbah on a regular basis. The rail suits, pensioners, the elderly, children, tourists, people without cars, in fact the rail suits anyone without a bike. And in some circumstances such as a flat tyre or accident it may even suit the people with bikes. As for the 135km journey well its about two hours and could be done regularly without giving one a coronary
