Local activists are taking credit for Santos’ decision to abandon plans for 50 coal seam gas wells around Gunnedah and Coonabarabran.
It comes even though the mining giant is still pursuing 18 wells in the Pilliga Forest.
Santos says the change is because they know more about the resource available in Narrabri, not because of pressure from community groups.
Environmentalists are expected to continue fighting until the gas company leaves the area.
