Railcorp says major trackwork about to be undertaken between Wickham and Newcastle has nothing to do with the debate over the line’s future.
Work that includes rebuilding the track using concrete sleepers and installing new signalling equipment, is currently being carried out between Broadmeadow and Wickham.
Similar work between Wickham and Newcastle is scheduled to start next June.
Railcorp says the materials can be re-used in other parts of the network, if the line between Wickham and Newcastle is closed.
