50 YEARS SINCE THE FREEDOM RIDE

It’s been 50 years since the Freedom Ride and Moree is ready for a week of celebration to commemorate the event.
In 1965, a busload of students from Sydney picked up a group of Aboriginal children from Moree and took them to the swimming pool, in a bid to resist discrimination.
A number of events will take place from tomorrow, starting with an open day at the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre.
“It’s a very important part of our history, you know, and we’ll have, there’s an iconic photo of Charlie Perkins and some young boys. Well those young boys are still around town so we’ve got round to nearly all of them to see if they’ll come on the day.”
It inspired Troy Cassar-Daley’s latest album, with his song ‘Freedom Ride’ co-written with Paul Kelly.
Both are expected to perform during the week.
