MAN CHARGED AFTER BREAKING INTO ELDERLY WOMAN’S NEWCASTLE HOME

A 19-year-old man has been charged after allegedly breaking into an elderly woman’s home in Newcastle.

About 3am on Sunday, an 84-year-old woman woke up to find an unknown man standing in her room.

The man spoke to the elderly woman before she called family members for help.

The man left the home and the woman wasn’t injured.

Following an investigation, police attended a home on the same street in Shortland and arrested the 19-year-old man.

He was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with aggravated break and enter, as well as commit serious indictable offence with people there.

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court yesterday, where he was formally refused bail to reappear at the same court today.
