– There was a touching tribute to Phillip Hughes at the Adelaide Oval this morning before play got underway in the first test. The players and the crowd stood for a moving round of applause for the 25 year old who died after being hit in the head with a cricket ball two weeks ago.
– Almost one in four Australian jihadists, fighting with Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria, have been killed. Attorney-General George Brandis says at least 20 Australians have been killed in the conflict so far.
– Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will ask the UNESCO word heritage committee not to list the great Barrier Reef as in danger. She’ll tell the gathering in Peru that Australia is doing enough to preserve the natural wonder.
– And a partly built Los Angeles apartment block has gone up in flames. The blaze closed major freeways and could be seen for kilometres.
