They struck a friendship in the toughest of times and former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke and golf legend Jack Newton have remained mates ever since his near fatal plane accident.
Struck by Newton’s recovery when struck down in the prime of his playing career, Mr Hawke became patron of his golf event which is now into is 30th year. While the golf gathering is about fun and frivolity, the former PM knows just how much Jack has done to help junior players and raise funds and awareness for diabetes research.
Speaking with NBN’s Jim Callinan at this year’s event, Mr Hawke couldn’t hide his admiration for a man he calls a great Australian.
