Merewether’s Ryan Callinan has survived a scare, to advance to round five of the 6,000-point Qualifying Series event in Japan.
The Australian started well, posting a six point eight on his opening ride to lead the heat.
But with the swell dropping, his opportunities were limited.
With less than four minutes remaining, Callinan was last.
“Ryan Callinan he waited for a while for this wave, nice arcing turn, jams it up off the lip.”
That gave him a four point three, before a five point seven on his last wave saw him get through in second spot.
