MYRTLE RUST FUNDING

The plight of horticulturalits on the mid north coast who have been affected by the introduced pest , Myrtle Rust, could be helped with new federal government funding.

Local growers of the native Lemon Myrtle, which is used to produce oil for use in medicines and cosmetics, have been hit hard by the orange coloured fungus which attacks new plant growth.

The federal government has allocated $700,000 in this week’s budget for the control and management of the pest.

A further $700,000 is being spent on developing resistance to the disease.
