A strong fuel odour that drifted through Newcastle’s Honeysuckle precinct last night was actually the result of a mishap on the harbour.
The source was the dredger, Brage R berthed at Throsby wharf.
During an onboard fuel transfer, around 1000 litres of diesel spilled into the harbour.
Today, the Newcastle Port Corporation placed a boom around the vessel to contain any further leaks, and used water jets to wash down nearby rock walls.
The spilt fuel will break down thanks to wind and tide action.
