Soil, groundwater and vapour testing is being carried out at the former Waratah gasworks.
Newcastle Council is undertaking the testing to determine the extent of contamination and shape future mitigation measures.
In the meantime, residents are urged not to eat fresh produce from affected properties and to wash their hands after handling soil.
