TIMBER COMPANY ASKING FOR COUNCIL HELP

Clarence Valley rate payers could be asked to stump up almost $50,000 to help a local business stay afloat.

Council is currently discussing whether it should help “Big River Timbers” with its rates and water bills, as it recovers from a fire which caused more than $20 million worth of damage last November.

The factory has stood down about half its workforce for more than a year while repairs are carried out.

Council officers recommended offering an interest free loan until the end of 2016, but some councillors opposed the idea.

Council will discuss the matter further next week.
