TRADITIONAL SMOKING CEREMONY FOR NEW COURT COMPLEX

A special Aboriginal ceremony was held at the site of the new court complex in Newcastle’s CBD this morning to recognise the Indigenous heritage of the area.

The traditional smoking ceremony was carried out by local elders and is said to ward off bad spirits and have cleansing properties.

Work on the $94-million complex started in January, with the seven-storey development due to be finished by the end of the year.

  1. This is fabulous! Recognition of the land and it’s past significance to Newcastle and the tradition custodians. A smoking ceremony to bless and clear the way for it’s future use. For people of all walks of life. Congratulations to John Holland for stepping up and stepping out in collaboration with aboriginal people.
