A SURPRISE FIND UNDER STROUD’S ARTS HALL

A contractor has stumbled across an important piece of Stroud’s history, while cleaning beneath the town’s arts hall.

The Grand United Friendly Society Banner, along with poles and leather carry straps, was found in this wooden box.

Historians believe the double-sided banner was painted in the 1920s.

It would have been used during community and fundraising events until World War Two, when the forerunner to health funds folded.
