LAKE MACQUARIE MP CALLS TO REDIRECT FUNDS FROM LIGHT RAIL

Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper says the state government should run Newcastle’s light rail on the existing rail corridor and redirect savings to other projects across the region.

The Hunter Street route will cost an additional $100-million, but Mr Piper says that money should instead be put towards funding the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange.

“It will allow people to readily access buses or trains and get people, hopefully, and I believe it will, using public transport, so that’s going to be good for the Newcastle CBD as well.”

Earlier this week, council awarded a $25.8-million contract to Daracon for stage one of the Glendale interchange project.
