INJURED SURFER RESCUED AT NEWCASTLE

A surfer out for an early morning wave became the subject of a full-scale rescue operation at Newcastle’s Susan Gilmore Beach today.

The 38-year-old is thought to have been dumped on a sandbank, badly injuring his leg.

Due to the rugged terrain, emergency crews opted to lower a stretcher to retrieve the surfer from the beach below.

He was carefully brought to the top of the cliff, then taken to John Hunter Hospital is stable condition with a dislocated or broken knee.
